EDIT 797-5T4
Course Title: Design Issues in Educational Gaming and Media
Course Number: EDIT 797 – 5T4
Reflection: This course was the first in my studies which really got me jazzed about what I am truly interested in from a research and vocational perspective. If I could make a living doing this “stuff,” well, all would be well in the world. This course, coupled with my first solid exposure to qualitative research, began to gel for me a solid sense of dissertation-appropriate interests by giving me the liberty to reflect upon prior studies in my first attempt to bring it all together.
Being a “beta” for a course under development, we had some luxury in assisting in the development of the class’ progression and I was even able to secure a guest speaker – Dr. Rick Blunt of the ADL Co-Lab.
Artifacts: Apart from participation, the class required three deliverables:
Affinity Bundle
Students will select 20 websites, video games, or media products based on an instructional theme, topic, or purpose (with instructor approval). Students must provide a rationale and evaluation rubric for the Affinity Bundle and its selections. In addition to the rationale and evaluation rubric, each of the Bundle selections, must have the following components:
- brief description
- url
- evaluation rating
Affinity Bundle Artifact in Word
Affinity Bundle Artifact in Excel
Design Document
Students will develop a design document which details the approach to design and development of the prototype instructional module prior to its actual development. The design document will present the design concept and related materials in a professionally-polished document to the instructor. The design document will include the following components:
- Problem Identification & Instructional Goal
- Needs/Learner Analysis
- Instructional/Tasks Analysis
- Instructional Objectives
- Instructional Approach
- Character/Story
- Progress & Evaluation
Design Document Artifact in Word
Prototype Educational Video Game
Students will design and develop an instructional module on a specific content area. Students will apply the instructional design process to the design and development of an educational video game prototype. Students can use any appropriate digital medium to construct their prototype (powerpoint, html, flash, etc.)
